Care Home Lounge Layout

Purchasing new care home lounge furniture is about more than just the furniture itself. The activities that take place within the room, the amount of residents generally in the space at any one time and the type of atmosphere you want to create all need to be considered. Most importantly, these factors all feed into the layout you choose for your care home lounge furniture. A study has shown that care home residents, on average, spend 19% of their time doing nothing, and 50% of their time with no social interaction, therefore creating a space that encourages participation and stimulation is incredibly important. Often chairs are placed around the outside of the room in care settings, however considering other layout options can promote social interaction and engagement between residents and also care staff and with activities. In this blog we give some simple ideas and different lounge layouts that you can consider when next purchasing care home lounge chairs or simply looking at a reorganisation of your current nursing home living room furniture.

Care home lounge layout

Groups or Clustered Care Home Lounge Furniture Layout

Clusters of different types of chairs within a space is a great way to provide different zones within the same room as well as allowing residents to have face to face conversations and interactions. By placing some chairs opposite others, residents can choose if they would rather watch the TV, read by a window or have a chat with a fellow resident, something that isn’t easily possible with all of the chairs next to each other around the outside of a room. Consider the following when looking at a clustered layout:

  • Different seat and back height styles of chairs should be mixed and matched around the room so that residents have a variety of options in different spaces.
  • Particularly if the lounge is the main communal space for the home, it is often the place where residents come together for a variety of tasks (activities, watching TV, reading a book, daydreaming out the window). Therefore, creating zones which consider the best layout for each of these activities is important. For example, how many residents on average like to watch the soaps in the evening? Make sure to provide enough chairs in each area or alternatively, keep the space flexible with the ability to move chairs around when needed.
  • Is a wide-open space agitating the residents or making them uncomfortable? In some cases, particularly residents living with dementia, a large open space can cause feelings of discomfort and worry. Therefore, if you have a large space, creating zones or areas within that space through the strategic placement of lounge chairs and tables for care homes can alleviate that stress by breaking up the space.

Creating a layout similar to that pictured in the scheme we designed below is worth considering if you’re looking for a change and have a multi-functional space.

Care Home Lounge Furniture layout

Types of Care Home Lounge Chair

Providing different types of chair within a setting is important to cater for different residents needs, as we explain in a previous blog post. When considering the positioning of these chairs in relation to the room have a think about the below:

  • Chairs with wings should be positioned at a slight angle towards each other. The wings on highback chairs are great for supporting residents, but they often provide an obstruction to conversation when placed directly next to each other. By angling the chairs slightly towards each other this will allow residents to have a conversation.
  • Different types of chair are more suitable for different functions and tasks. For instance, in an activities area you may want to provide medium back chairs, whereas for a TV area higher backed chairs with and without wings would be suitable.
  • Consider the introduction of 2 seaters. When we look at our own homes, we often have 2 or 3 seater sofas which are great for a family space. Residents and carers are family within a care home therefore providing 2 seater options will give even more of a family, collaborative impression, rather than chairs which are for sole use.

Access

Allowing adequate access for those using wheelchairs and Zimmer frames is key to making sure that everyone can be involved in communal spaces as much as they would like to be. As a general rule of thumb, allow 1 – 1.2m gaps between chairs and along gangways for wheelchairs to be able to manoeuvre and access safely.

We hope that this blog has given you some inspiration to consider when looking at your care home lounge layout. There can often seem to be lots of things to consider when working out what layout will work best for residents and carers, but promoting interaction, conversation and stimulation amongst residents should always be one of the key considerations. Our interior design team have a wealth of experience in compiling interiors schemes, mood boards and room layouts as shown in this blog that cater to your specific requirements, if you’d like to discuss your next project and get some expert advice you can contact us on 01603 664900 or Email Us.

As life expectancy increases, more of us are having to deal with symptoms collectively known as dementia. This includes difficulty with memory, perception and the processing of colour and coloured surfaces.

How do environments impact on life with dementia?

For those with dementia, ‘visuospatial difficulties’ are commonplace. Cluttered or brightly coloured interiors can trigger confusion and frustration. Conversely, a lack of definition or contrast can have the same effect. Getting the balance right is difficult, but optimum levels can be achieved.

Developed in partnership with leading academics and care professionals, The Remini Dementia Collection from Furncare is an exclusive new furniture collection specifically for those living with the condition. It includes a range of specially designed bedroom interiors with four distinct room schemes to accommodate individual tastes and styles.

Definition and contrast

An unreliable memory is a widely recognised symptom of dementia, as is confused spatial orientation. Some may forget what’s inside a drawer whilst others may be unable to open it. That’s why special cut-outs feature in Remini furniture soft-close doors and drawers. This enables residents to see what’s inside without having to open them.

Whilst cut-outs in the wardrobes, cabinets and dressing tables provide a simple way to open drawers and doors, users will be more familiar with conventional handles. They’ve been incorporated too, as a comfortingly familiar alternative way to access what’s inside.

Remini furniture features rounded edges and is finished in contrasting colours and textures. Drawer fronts and doors are matt grey, whilst cabinets are finished in natural oak. This distinction and the contrast it provides is invaluable. Similarly, contrasting fabrics are used in the upholstery of the seating. Even the cushions feature contrast piping to help users process the shapes and edges. All fabrics are fire retardant, water and stain resistant.

Seeing the light

With age, more light is needed to see, and glare can be a problem. When selecting colour schemes for those with dementia, ‘Light Reflective Values’ are important. Referred to as LRV, this measures how much light is reflected or absorbed by a surface. Black has an LRV of 000 whilst white has an LRV of 100.

For those with dementia, visuospatial processing can be helped by factoring sufficient contrast in to surfaces. If tonal values of furniture and the wall behind are too similar, the furniture itself can be difficult to see. An LRV difference of 30 points between adjacent objects will help residents to distinguish between them. Any less can have the opposite effect.

The Remini Dementia Collection from Furncare features coordinated interiors and quotes LRV ratings for each item. It recommends complementary wall and floor coverings for perfectly balanced LRV interiors for those with dementia.

Local MP and former Prime Minister Liz Truss officially opened the new Furncare National Distribution Centre last week.

Liz Truss Carl Southall Furncare

The Grand Unveiling

Having been welcomed by MD Carl Southall, Ms. Truss was invited to unveil a commemorative plaque which was concealed behind a pair of Furncare curtains. Drawing the Beatrice Indigo curtains, Ms. Truss was somewhat surprised to reveal a second pair of Furncare curtains. To everyone’s amusement, she then drew the second pair of Kibale Papaya curtains to finally reveal the plaque.

Guided Tour

Ms. Truss was then taken on a tour of the new 30,0002ft facility, trying out a Collette High Back Chair and meeting many of the Furncare team along the way. Following the tour, Ms. Truss was invited to take a seat once again – this time the driving seat of a Furncare delivery vehicle.

It’s incredibly important that older people are able to live in comfortable surroundings with the right care and facilities appropriate to their needs. It’s great to see a thriving business in South West Norfolk playing its part in ensuring that this is the case.”

The Rt. Hon. Liz Truss MP

Rapid Delivery

Furncare, a leading provider of specialist furniture solutions to the care sector, consolidated their four warehouses and relocated to the new complex which includes warehousing, upholstery workshops and offices. The new facility is on the A11, linking the site to the UK motorway network and helping to ensure rapid delivery of stock furniture items in as little as five working days.

Huge Boost

Carl Southall, Furncare MD, is delighted to see the new facility open. “To have Liz Truss, our local MP, support our investment by opening the centre for us is a huge boost for the whole Furncare team. We’re committed to delivering unbeatable quality, value and service for our clients, so it’s important to have the very best production and distribution facilities.”

Three magic words help Furncare deliver to your chosen room.

Making life easier and totally hassle-free

Furncare are now using what3words – a simple way to be more specific about locations – to guide their drivers to a precise room inside a care home, making life easier and totally hassle-free for busy care home managers and staff.

The recently opened new Furncare National Distribution Centre is at what3words location dwelled.owned.manicured. The fleet of Furncare vans departs from there every morning, loaded with anything from specialist bedroom furniture and seating to lounge and dining furniture.

Precise location of a care home room

To find the precise location of a care home or room within a care home, download the what3 words app, find the location on the map or simply click from the destination room and quote the unique three-word location code when ordering your furniture. Each combination of three words pinpoints a three metre square, giving the Furncare driver all the information they need to deliver the order and streamline the process for the care home team.

Having delivered, Furncare drivers can then assemble furniture if needed, secure tall furniture to walls as a safety measure, remove all the packaging (including recyclable and recycled materials) and even take away redundant furniture for disposal.

Exceptional service

Randal Southall, Furncare Director, is proud of the latest improvements to product availability, rapid turnaround time and overall performance now being consistently achieved since the opening of the National Distribution Centre. “Our customers really appreciate the exceptional service our drivers provide. Making sure everything is set up for the client is all part of that service, whether it’s delivering one chair or a complete home refurb.”

Hi I’m Mike Goldwater and I was at the photoshoot for the new Furncare Liv Collection of bedrooms and communal rooms for challenging environments and those living with disability or dementia. Having spent some time ‘living’ with this furniture, I thought you’d be interested in my take on what I experienced.

Whilst setting up the rooms, I can’t deny that for just a moment I completely forgot I was in a photographic studio. The rooms, the furniture, the soft furnishings and the general vibe looked and felt so homely.

The first set we built was the B001 bedroom. That classic Waylen furniture is very cool, and heavy! The cabinets and wardrobes are really substantial, and the solid wooden surfaces feel organic and natural. The Dove Grey painted finishes give it a modern feel and contrast well with the real wood. Whilst it looks nice and solid, it’s also safe. All the corners and edges are carefully rounded off which not only makes them safer, it’s also a really stylish feature too.

I’m quite tall, but the Everly bed was a perfect fit (don’t tell anyone I tried it for size). And the crisp bedlinen and duvet cover felt great. If it wasn’t for those bright studio lights I think I could have snatched a most welcome 40 winks. Wish I’d thought to draw the stylish Kaya Ochre curtains now!

The Waylen dressing table doubled as my temporary office for the day, and the Jansson chair – upholstered in Nevis Putty faux leather – was very comfortable. The Elm tub chair was far too comfortable though, that became my go-to resting place between shots as it really is great with that feelgood Aspen Light Charcoal upholstery.

Our design coordinator came up with such a great theme for the room – even the recommended wallcoverings and pictures were carefully considered and worked a treat. Great job Jade.

A quick wall swap and we were in a glorious green B002 bedroom. All the soft furnishings, cushions, curtains and pictures were swapped over, and the room took on a whole new character. Lush, rich, sophisticated. The studio crew liked the curtain fabric, which worked so well with the Annika Emerald cushions. Even the smart Kira bedside lamp looked great on the Waylen three-drawer bedside cabinet.

Unfortunately there wasn’t much time to dwell on this lovely bedroom as we moved on to the matching L002 Living Room. Just like its bedroom cousin, the living room feels lush and homely. They say it’s all in the detail, and Jade’s selection of Gazania Forest curtains, Loreto Forest and Imbali Emerald cushions and the Palm Canvas on the wall was a triumph again. Having said that, the stars of the show were definitely the magnificent Luxe Bottle Green Rita sofas. Hard to believe that the soft velvety upholstery is waterproof, fire retardant and stain resistant as it just feels so nice. Just to be clear though, it IS waterproof, fire retardant and stain resistant!

Having had to surrender my Waylen dressing table/desk, I parked my laptop on the matching Waylen dining table for a while. Easy to see how nice it would be to have the same theme and furniture range flowing seamlessly from bedroom to dining room and living room. It really makes for such a calm environment.

Another wall swap and we’re in the grey L001 Living Room above – cousin to the B001 bedroom. All sleek, smooth and sophisticated. The Vision Pewter curtains were a hit with the crew again (self-proclaimed curtain aficionados!), but yet again those Rita sofas stole the show. This time they were upholstered in Compass Pewter which, just like the Luxe Bottle Green version, is waterproof, fire retardant and stain resistant. I say that because I always thought that you could spot contract grade upholstery a mile off. This whole collection is contract grade furniture (in fact it exceeds contract grade standards) but it really doesn’t look like contract furniture. It looks and feels more like home. And you simply can’t get better than that!

Don’t take my word for it though. Visit the Furncare showroom and try The Liv Collection for yourself. Failing that, request a Liv Collection brochure and see the whole collection.

Social Value programmes help to ensure public funds contribute to social welfare and community wellbeing through economic, social and environmental initiatives within an organisation. Economic objectives include employment and professional development opportunities, but attracting the best talent can still be a challenge for businesses in the care sector.

Not everyone can just turn up at the office on a Monday morning, work five days without distraction then stand down for the weekend before the cycle repeats itself again. And again. We all have competing priorities, so something’s gotta give.

To attract and nurture the best talent, Furncare recognised the need for a more flexible approach a long time ago. The advantages are plain to see, and Jade Eaglen is one of many on the Furncare team to have benefitted in the past year. There are currently around 60 staff across three Furncare sites in the UK.

Jade Eaglen Interior Designer“Being able to develop my career has been wonderful, not only from a professional perspective. I really appreciate being able to balance work and my family life. I hope Furncare feel the same way!”

With a rich skillset and invaluable experience, Jade was a great fit for the Design Coordinator vacancy at Furncare last year. A qualified interior designer with commercial experience and a passion to create beautiful rooms for clients, there was only one ‘problem’. Jade is, amongst many other things, mum to young George. Despite the support of her husband and extended family, juggling the demands of work and family life threatened to undermine Jade’s professional aspirations.

Furncare’s more flexible approach to work and a healthy respect for work/life balance meant that Jade could take on this exciting new role. Working a hybrid week in the office and from home around her childcare responsibilities has worked well. Jade particularly values time with her colleagues in the office, and the opportunity to focus on live projects without distraction at home.

Jade joined Furncare in June 2023, and has become an integral part of a dynamic team. Since then, young George has flourished. He’s now settled into pre-school and has developed a keen interest in tractors and Peppa Pig. His mum still prefers Percy Pig!
